June 2007 Newsletter

Greetings to all; Nemo is fast becoming a local celebrity. The Cub Scout Day camp on June 10th at Yellow Creek Park was a success with over 60 cub scouts being introduced to Nemo. This was a real treat for us all.

Nemo’s latest appearance was at the Owensboro Rotary Club where we introduced the WKRC to over 65 local business leaders. The meeting was well attended and our presentation of the WKRC was well received. Nemo did not disappoint the crowd. When asked about why the plastic was laid on the floor Nemo responded right on cue; however he came very close to missing the drop cloth!

Our Rehab efforts continue with a planned release when I return from China the week of July 9th. We hope to work with Don’s rehab team and have the group get together that week to set the Raptors free. I wish to thank all those who helped with the baby Kestrel. He is doing just fine and is a real handful for Paul. Yes, even a Master Falconer can be challenged by little Falcons. They are cute and very, very fast. Our little Screen owl was released successfully. This was not publicized as this was a “soft release” also known as “hacking back”. What is a soft release? This means the bird is released in a location where we can keep an eye on it and provide food as needed. This is typically done with young birds of prey.

Our Eagle Scout Project continues to advance. All the materials have been located. Jon Caleb needs to purchase $200 of metal sheeting and will be doing a fund raiser. Anyone wished to assist can contact Paul Hardesty as he is our main spokes person with the Boy Scouts.

Upcoming events in July are foreseen during “Friday After 5”. This will be a fund raising event and public awareness for the WKRC. All those interested please contact me. John Kurtz of Kurtz Auction has offered the use of a canopy for shade. We continue to grow as we have over 60 people on our news letter distribution. If you know of others interested in our organization please have them go to our website contact us.
