July 2007 Newsletter

Greetings to all;

Congratulations! The mews build by Jon-Caleb our Eagle Scout is complete. I would like to personally thank all the volunteers that helped this weekend to complete this major project. Jon-Caleb and his father especially wanted to thank Paul and Don for all their guidance and elbow grease getting this job done. The next step is moving the mews in to place. This can be done in a week or two after the construction is completed behind our location at Yellow Creek. I will coordinate with the DC parks department regarding the re-location of the mews. Another Eagle Scout, Colby, helped out on this project and is also interested in working with the WKRC on his Eagle Scout project.

We will plan a celebration the day when the first Raptor moves into his new home, which I hope will be very soon and in much cooler weather. Kiwanis club of Owensboro invited Nemo (RT) and I to speak this month. Nemo did not say much but did steal all the attention. It was a nice talk with many questions about the WKRC in our community.

Upcoming events in August include a fund raiser: We are planning on Wednesday August 15th; alternative date could be Tuesday the 14th, in the evening 6pm to meet at my home for the event. We will be picking up litter along the county road for $200 a mile. We have selected 5 miles on quite country roads, Winkler, King Rd and Pleasant point in Philpot. So far we have 8- 10 people that are interested in helping. We could use more. The 14th is not set in stone and is subject to change due to weather or Murphy’s Law. Raptor update:

Our single most focused goal is to get our new mews operational with a patient. This way we can begin to use our volunteers to come to Yellow Creek on a daily basis. This will give Don some rest. Lord knows he has done a great job however this is not a long term solution. We have several patients now which require more room because they are healing and need exercise.

The next project will be a flight Cage. This will begin after the digging is finished in our designated area. The materials are already donated and Reggie is just waiting for the word to get started. All those willing to help out on litter pick up on the 15th of August please contact me directly. This is a change from the original target date. I have a release form that must be signed for the County so please contact me and I will get this to you.

Thanks to all for the help
