April, 2007
Greetings:
We continue to move forward with the Center at Yellow Creek. Some of our volunteers are affectionately calling it the "Coop" and you'll never guess my new nick name. We have some really creative energy with our team of volunteers. Rather than write about them let me show you with photos. Eric Houtchen The raptor hospital has a fresh coat of paint and the floors will be completed over the Easter holiday. Those of you who wanted to help but could not can still assist with a donation to the remodeling effort. Please make donations payable to the Western KY Raptor Center.
This will go a long way to helping us to complete our vision and mission. We have lights!
Rodney May from May electric has installed lights in our Operating room. May Electric is a sponsor we owe a great deal of thanks to as well as our other photogenic volunteers.
The latest news in raptor patients is a Red Tail Hawk. This unfortunate Raptor was shot in the wing. Don tried his best to save the wing unfortunately the injuries were too severe. After careful review of the federal guidelines we decided to save this Raptor by amputating the wing tip and place the Red tail into our educational program. This is our first permanent resident raptor. The need for a permanent home (mews) is now upon us.
We are fortunate that we have an Eagle Scout trying to help us in this regard.
What to call our first resident?
We are looking for ideas to name this first addition to the WKRC and would like to ask the children in our community for ideas. Mike Roby gave a wonderful talk at the museum today to one of the largest crowds in recent memory. With spring break underway there were plenty of Children ready to learn.
Professor Terry Tillen, Biology Professor at the Owensboro Community & Technical College is coordinating a group of volunteers to attend the spring 2007 wildlife rehab basic course in Murray KY. This is wonderful news as we expand our WKRC experience and rehab capabilities here in Western KY.
Thanks to all for who have helped us to move forward to save these wonderful birds of prey and educate the world around us.
Please feel free to pass our newsletter to friends and family.
We could not do this without your support so feel free to share this news letter and our WebsiteJ.
Sincerely,
Eric Miller
